A Study on Stimulated Brillouin Scattering Threshold and Impact on the Transmission Characteristics

In this paper we discuss the definition of the input power limitation caused by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a single-mode fiber. We experimentally clarify the correlation between different SBS threshold definitions by taking the various types of singlemode fibers into consideration. We also clarify the relationship between the SBS thresholds with different definitions and analogue transmission performance by evaluating the input power dependence of the carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) characteristic. Moreover, we discuss the evaluation conditions required for accurate measurement of the SBS threshold.
